Why I love my Coffee (time)

Around a year back I remember taking this time management course by Ankur Warikoo where he talks about allocating his daily tasks to different times of the day based on how productive he is during that time of the day.

Having performed the same exercise, I realised that I'm most productive in the morning through to lunch and then my energy level keeps on dipping until it plummets to rock bottom at around 4 pm.

I'm not sure if this is because of the fatigue of the work done during the day or if it is simply a result of social conditioning, where, for years, my family and I have always had coffee at 4 pm and it usually marked the end of the day, be it in school or college. (It's most probably the latter)

And this is where my love for coffee time comes in! Coffee time is my favourite time of the day - when I can disconnect from everything. Drinking coffee gives me an instant lift - and wakes me up for the rest of the day.

Though I realise that this dependence is not healthy, I have accepted it as a vice that I can't do without - and the pros far outweigh the cons - or so I've convinced myself.

“I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you f*cking like something, like it .... That’s who I am, goddamn it! That whole guilty pleasure thing is full of f*cking shit.” - Dave Grohl

And I love my coffee and my coffee time! :)

Choosing my coffee

Disclaimer: I am no expert in making coffee and I have no idea how to make coffee from scratch. The opinions that follow are from a humble instant coffee merchant.

Though on the one side I'm extremely risk-averse, there's this other side that always wants to experiment with different brands - and this side has been winning lately. And so, I've learned to step out of my Bru/Nescafe comfort zone and was pleasantly surprised with the results.

Out of the multiple brands that I've tried recently, the one that I keep going back to is the Caramel Coffee from Country Bean. Other honorable mentions include Hazelnut Coffee from Country Bean and Alicafe classic.

Each one has its own unique taste and is definitely worth giving a shot. I like my coffee strong and with as little sugar as possible - which, I think, brings through the real taste of the coffee powder.

The perfect accomplice

Coffee time is not complete without the perfect snack to accompany it. And right now my go-to snack is the crisp-on-the-outside, yet soft-on-the-inside, pazhampori. (banana fritter)

But since this is not always available, I settle for parle's elaichi rusk. It doesn't get much better than dipping the rusk in your coffee, taking it out right after the coffee has seeped into its pores, and tasting that elaichi-coffee combination.

Setting the scene

As important as the coffee itself, is the place where you choose to enjoy your hot beverage. Normally on weekdays, I try and stay away from my room - where I work. Most of the time I would sit with family and enjoy the coffee while they have their chai. It's usually a happy scene with casual conversations floating around.

Some coffee captures :)
